The PinkNews Awards 2021 will introduce two brand new categories honouring leaders and role models within the LGBT+ community.

The annual ceremony recognises the incredible contributions of those who campaign for LGBT+ people and equality worldwide. Each year, the community comes together to celebrate the unprecedented achievements of businesses, organisations and individuals alike.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan kicked off last year’s event, held virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic, by thanking activists and frontline heroes for going “above and beyond” to support the community.

Dr Rachel Levine, who was later appointed US assistant secretary of health, Labour MP Nadia Whittome and the makers of landmark Netflix documentary Disclosure were among the deserving 2020 PinkNews Awards winners.

LGBT+ activist Lady Phyll, legendary television host Lorraine Kelly and X Factor winner Joe McElderry were all on hand to present the awards.

This year, PinkNews is introducing two new awards to celebrate the people leading on the frontlines and inspiring change within their local communities.

The Local Leader award will be bestowed upon an individual who is making a difference for queer people in their local area.

This leader could display their commitment to the queer community in a variety of ways, but they will have proven their tireless dedication to implementing change in their community.

The Community Role Model award will honour a role model who has a proven track record of giving back through voluntary work, engaging in community-based projects or working with local groups and charities.

Nominations for the Local Leader award are open here, and for the Community Role model award here. They will close at the end of Wednesday 21 July.

The 2021 PinkNews Awards will take place in November. As well as remarks from London mayor Sadiq Khan, last year’s virtual awards also saw Labour leader Keir Starmer call for unity agains homophobia and transphobia, and former prime minister Theresa May demand “respect” for trans lives.
